Tom Lee Park
Tom Lee Park, the stunning new $61 million, 31-acre park on the Mississippi riverfront, is the front door to Memphis. Tom Lee Park was named to honor the heroism of Memphian Tom Lee, who couldn’t swim but saved 32 people when a sternwheeler capsized in the Mississippi River in 1925.
Whether you’re looking for a place to sit and watch the river roll by, the most unique playground you’ve seen, the best pick-up basketball court in the South, fun food and drink, native plants, gardens and trees or stunning public art, Tom Lee Park is for you.
Tom Lee Park features:
- One of the 11 Most Unique Playgrounds in the U.S., the 23,000-square-foot Life on the River playground that features a playscape inspired by the Mississippi River
- A hammock grove that overlooks the Mississippi River
- The 15,000-square-foot Sunset Canopy with courts for pickleball and pick-up basketball and equipment available to borrow free of charge
- Hi Neighbor Café – featuring brats, hot dogs and strangely good cookies
- Ben and Jerry’s ice cream stand
- Public art, including A Monument to Listening, Theaster Gates’ sculpture of 33 basalt thrones in honor of Tom Lee’s legacy
